Ooooh, I love making lists!
Cons:
- There is no Wawa on or around campus. Plan ahead, hoagie-wise.
- You are living in North Philadelphia, and muggings do happen sometimes. Now, I look about as intimidating as a feather pillow and I hit that rare combination of clever enough to be mean and loud enough to be heard, but I’ve been walking around North Philly for 2 years without being mugged. It does happen, but trust me, everybody at your high school is exaggerating. I know this because everyone here has stories about how the people at their high schools expected them to be stabbed within a week of living here, and most people never actually got stabbed.
- When Temple students get excited, we get excited. I have personally witnessed students mobbing a Red Bull car like lepers trying to get a hold of Jesus.
- Speaking of Jesus, every now and then there’s a guy holding several bibles and shouting at everyone that they’re fornicators.
- I’m pretty sure the people who work in customer service at Temple University must be people who failed a psychological exam to work at the DMV.
But don’t be deterred! Here are some pros:
- Classes are pretty awesome. There’s pretty much a major for everyone, and even the gen eds aren’t too bad.
- Campus is really nice. I always tell people that you can only tell it’s nighttime by looking at the sky. Looking at the buildings, you could never tell the sun wasn’t out. Calling back to the “mugging” tirade I went on earlier, the campus is actually really safe.
- Big enough that there’s always new people to meet, small enough that you don’t feel like a number.
- You can get anywhere in the city for around 10 dollars, usually less. The subway runs right under campus, there are buses going every which way, and if nothing else, you can’t walk 2 blocks on broad street without seeing at least 5 taxis. You do not need a car if you go to Temple.
- Bill Cosby went here, and he’s doing pretty well for himself.
- It’s pretty damn affordable compared to a lot of other schools in the area.
- The fight song is easy to remember
- If you walk around long enough on campus, you will find something interesting happening, whether it’s a protest at the Bell Tower, a movie screening in the dorm’s basement (this is how I saw “American History X”), or a wizard selling gas masks (this actually happened), you’re going to find something cool to talk about.
- There are at least three coffee shops on campus.
- There is a group for everyone. It’s not hard to find interesting people to talk to at Temple, and if you’re really having a hard time, just walk around the area of the Art school, pick the most interesting-looking person there, and say hello.
- Our mascot is an owl which makes us wizards
