You know why I write on tumblr during class? Because if I don’t have some task to perform with my hands, I’m unable to stay focused for 50 minutes on anything.
However, if you’re really worried I’m not paying attention, today we talked about:
- How to prepare for the midterm examination, and how important it is that we show up for it, because it’s not something we can make up.
- The founding fathers and the wording of the Declaration of Independence and Constitution, particularly their avoidance of the word “slavery.” One notorious example of this is the fugitive slave act, which, despite being intended to force northern states to return runaway slaves to the south, never actually uses the word “slavery,” instead referring to runaways as “fugitives from justice.” He briefly talked about the three-fifths compromise, and how it avoided using the word “slavery” by listing everyone who wasn’t a slave, and then referring to enslaved people as “other persons.”
- He, at least once during the lecture, joked that he’d like to “axe” us a question.
- New York was one of the first states to disenfranchise female voters by using “male” as one of their prerequisites for voter registration.
- Since there was a law in Pennsylvania that said you can’t hold slaves for more than 6 months, George Washington, every 6 months, would cart all his slaves down to Mt. Vernon, then directly back up to Philadelphia to restart the clock so he could continue to hold slaves without adhering to the law. I believe he characterized the slaves’ reactions as “Why the hell did we just do that?!” but I’m foggy on the exact wording.
- He let us go a few minutes early, not too much, but, matching up to the pet peeve he’s referred to all semester, he did make a point of it to tell everyone not to pack up until he had finished. He then reiterated how important the midterm exam was and wished us a good weekend.
The opinion of someone who’s willing to criticize without showing their face means literally nothing to me. While I’m fairly certain my history professor knows I use my laptop during class, he would be incorrect, as are you, in thinking that I don’t pay attention. I actually love that class, I find the content fascinating, and I only type things so I can really take in the entire lecture.
Now, a question for you: Does your third-grade spelling teacher know you didn’t pay attention?
