  He’s really only a mary sue if you read him that way. Remember that he was just a baby when he got to Earth, so the Clark Kent persona is the real one. He’s really the bumbling, awkward dude you see, and the “big blue boy scout” image is actually his mental image of what a “superman” should be. The “mary sue” image you see is flawed, socially awkward, mild-mannered (it’s cliche for a reason) polite-to-a-fault, a little bit dopey Clark Kent trying to imagine how someone with no faults would act.

  “Superman” is a Mary Sue character, but he’s a Mary Sue character invented by three-dimensional character Clark Kent. When he’s being Superman, stopping mid-crime fight to save a kitten, calling everyone “Miss” and “Mister,” it’s kind of like that kid who was pretending to be Sam Winchester saying “Evening Barkeep! I’d like one alcohol, please!” It sounds right to him, but to everyone else, it sounds super corny.
