Ideally, actors of color should have been cast as Katniss, Gale, and Haymitch. In the books, Katniss describes the Seam people in a way that identifies them as an ethnic minority. Since these descriptions were not explicitly stated in the films, the fact that Seam folks are an ethnic minority does not translate to screen unless their PoC status is immediately visible by the audience.
If they’d allowed actresses of all races to audition for her part and Jennifer Lawrence had still been picked, I’d still think they should’ve cast an actress who actually looks anything like the character. However, I’d have an easier time believing the best actress for the job had been picked if the audition process had not been “whites only.”
