Entering into season 1, episode 8. Edouard Kagame is on my fanart to-draw list. My favorite character appears to be Kellog. Pretty sure, given the alternative, I’d rather align myself ideologically with Liber8. Sort of wondering what it is exactly that makes Kiera actually want to get home, since the future is awful, her husband’s an asshole, and her kid is sort of a turd (although I suppose she’s rather attached to him, given that she is his mother).

Also, are we ever going to get a straight answer on whether or not doing stuff in 2012 will muck up 2077?

Whenever people try to defend rape jokes by saying how it’s okay to joke about murder, I am always just left speechless

If there’s even one woman within earshot of your joke, there’s at least a 20-25% chance she’s been sexually assaulted and you just made a joke out of it

But you could be speaking to a crowd of thousands and tell a joke about murder with absolute certainty that none of the people listening to you has been murdered

I’d say that Continuum isn’t even trying to be subtle with their commentary, but then I remember that this was in an obscure font, printed on a building in the background, for approximately half a second.

Sadly its still too subtle as there are still quite a few people who interpret this the wrong way thinking its pro-corp propaganda stuff :P

Wait, seriously? Were they not listening when the show was saying that even though Liber8’s methods are deplorable, their message is exactly on point? That was like, season 1 episode 1.

Like, I’m only six episodes in so this might change, but are they not getting how literally everything Liber8 says about corporate control is 100% true, and that this story could just as easily and just as sympathetically be told from the point-of-view of Kellog and Kagame?

Well, I work at a movie theater, so saying “soda and popcorn”/”coke and popcorn” is pretty common. It’s not like waitressing where I have to write down their orders.

I’ve never worked at a movie theater, unless you count the time I worked concessions for a live theater, but if I imagine my reaction would be similar. If they ordered a “soda and popcorn,” I would ask them what kind of soda they wanted and feel disdain in their direction because they are holding up the line with their refusal to be specific. If they ordered a “coke and popcorn,” then I hand them a regular coca-cola and a bag of popcorn with no follow-up questions.

where I live its like a 50% chance that any give customer will say coke rather than soda so my follow up is “regular coke?” and then people also have a chance to clarify if they wanted diet or something cause half the time the forget to say so anyway

I just keep thinking, like, do these people go up to a bar and say

“I’ll have a wine.”
“What kind would you like?”
“Beer, please.”

I mean, when I worked as a waiter, it waas generally encouraged to assume the customer knew what they were ordering, and if they want a diet coke, they say “diet coke” when we take drink orders. Same goes for Sprite. When I ask a customer what they’ll have to drink, they should tell me exactly what they want. Unless they have questions before they order, the conversation should go like this:

“What’ll you have to drink?”
“(they tell me exactly what they want to drink)”
“(I bring it to them)”

I just feel like using “Coke” as a generic descriptor for all sodas just throws another wrench into the works. If someone orders a coke, I am bringing them regular, classic Coca-Cola. If someone orders a “soda,” I ask them what kind and I think they’re an asshole on par with people who, when I ask what they’d like to eat, reply “food.”

If I worked at your work, a lot of people would be getting regular coca-cola, regardless of what they wanted, because what they ordered was regular coca-cola, which is what “coke” is. If you want diet coke or cherry coke or sprite, then say that when your server asks you what you want to drink.

They can’t possibly expect their servers to assume they’ve ordered incorrectly and ask for clarification after being told they want an item on the menu. I can’t order a hamburger at McDonald’s and then get angry that the server didn’t anticipate that what I really wanted when I said “hamburger” was french fries.

I’ve only heard people say call sodas a coke in the plural. as in “I have some cokes in the fridge, do you want one” but you wouldn’t say “cokes” to describe more than one coca-colas. I guess it’s similar to fish vs fishes.

The only time the word “cokes” is acceptable is when you are describing more than one coca-cola. The only time the word “coke” is acceptable, when talking about a drink, is when referring to coca-cola. If your friend says they have cokes in the fridge, and their fridge does not have coca-cola in it but does have cans of sprite, then your friend is a liar who just lied to you.

But when you say “I’ll have a coke” to a waiter or waitress, in my mind, there shouldn’t be any follow-up questions. Maybe “we don’t have coke, is Pepsi okay?”

If my server asks me what I’ll have to drink and I say “A coke,” and they ask me what kind, then my reaction is “I’m sorry, was I being unclear when I said ‘coke’ or did you just not hear me?”

If this conversation transpires:

“What’ll you have to drink?”
“Coke.”
“What kind?”
“Coke.”

Then you and your waiter should be locked in a neverending cycle of “coke.” “What kind?” “Coke.” “What kind?” “Coke.” “What kind?” and so on ad infinitem.

Because if they didn’t know what you meant by “coke” the first time you say it, then by all linguistic logic and reason, you repeating yourself when they ask for clarification should not help.

“Here, put this food in the fridge.”
“Which of these appliances is a fridge?”
“The fridge.”
“Okay, I’ll do that!”
“What did you think I meant by ‘the fridge?’”
“Well, you could have meant the fridge, the oven, the microwave, or the toaster.”
“Wh— no, I couldn’t have, that’s why I said ‘fridge.’”

Also, the only areas where follow-up questions are necessary when ordering a fizzy carbonated beverage are the ones where the general category shares a name with one of the specific beverages. If you go to a restaurant in any area that calls it “soda” or “pop,” you’re not going to say “I’ll have a soda.” You’re going to say “I’ll have a Dr Pepper,” or whatever type of soda you want. Walk into one of those restaurants and say “I’ll have a soda” and the server will look at you like this just went down:

“What’ll you have to drink?”
“I’ll have a drink.”

Basically, putting aside “soda vs. pop” for a minute, I have just never understood calling a fizzy carbonated beverage a “coke” unless it is a classic coca-cola. If you ask for a coke, it should be understood that you are referring to coca-cola. Calling all soda “coke” is just adding unnecessary steps between me and refreshment.

It’s nothing against people who refer to it that way, but no amount of explaining will ever make this make sense to me. I make no claims that anyone is better or worse based on what they call their sweetened fizzy drinks, but from where I’m standing, calling them “cokes” even when they aren’t coca-cola is completely illogical.

The Enterprise crew going to a bowling alley and Kirk is wearing sunglasses and driving people there in his convertible and Spock and Uhura are sitting obnoxiously close together in the back seat with his arm around her (so everyone they pass on the road is aware they’re dating, you see), and Chekov is sitting in the front seat, just really excited that he gets to go out with friends

Then they get there and Sulu and Scotty are there already, sitting on the hood of Sulu’s car and Scotty snuck a flask for everyone to share and Sulu is wearing a leather jacket and wrap-arounds and they’re passing a joint between them

Then they all go inside and find that Bones showed up an hour early because “there’s a window to these things, Jim, did you want to come all the way here and find there’s no lanes left?” and has been holding a lane for them the whole time.

A lot of people ignore the fact that Mr. Sulu has a daughter, and I wanted to draw a picture of a photo taken on the day Demora Sulu reported for duty aboard the Enterprise, next to Captain Hikaru Sulu of the U.S.S. Excelsior. I imagine this photo is framed and hung by the door of her quarters aboard the Enterprise.

Subnote: I looked up how to write “Hikaru Sulu” in Japanese. Turns out there are some very intelligent, helpful trekkies out there if you’re willing to wade past the ones who are still at all-out war over the issue of whether or not Klingons have forehead ridges.

The person on the left should be a familiar face to some of you, although her presence in this book should have no bearing on what happens to her in the first one, so if you’re still not finished my first book, don’t make any assumptions about her based on the fact that she’s in my companion piece!

The other person will be accompanying her in the new book, and is one of my favorite characters so far.

I know your bio says you go to Temple, but I was wondering if your religion is something you really value (for lack of better term, sorry) or just the way you grew up?
