who is your favorite character on firefly and why?

I’ll be here all day if I try to figure out which character is my favorite, so I’ll just list all the characters and why I like them:
- Mal- I like Mal because he’s a character who’s still around after his story ended. He’s so convinced that the war was his day, his story, but he lost, and the war is over, and he’s still here, so he just does what he can to make it to the next day.
- Inara- A sex-positive female lead of color who is a contant source of wisdom and asserts her right to her own space and her own independent existence from the rest of the crew? What exactly is not to like?
- Wash: Because he has that rare quality of being the only one who seems to realize how ridiculous their lives are. He’s like Arthur from the Magic School Bus, only happier, or like Rory, only he dies slightly less often.
- Kaylee: Because she’s sweet and bubbly and likes strawberries and knows how to work a spaceship better than anyone, and is also sex-positive and also she’s friends with everyone and hates mean people.
- Jayne: Because he thinks he’s super-serious even though he’s a bit of a doof, and because he knows he’s a bit of a doof, but you’d better not mention it because he’ll shoot you dead so fast it’ll knock you out of your boots. He reminds me quite a bit of Lassiter from Psych.
- River: She’s a mentally ill badass who uses her perceived weakness to her advantage. Also, she likes playing games and dancing, and doesn’t like hospitals, and I can identify with that, and I thought it was hilarious when she pretended to be British just to mess with Badger.
- Shepherd Book: Because he’s like, balance personified. He’s incredibly physically fit and extremely intelligent. He’s a man of faith and a man of science. He’s an older man who doesn’t mind engaging in youthful pranks,
- Zoe: I don’t hate to sound like a broken record here, but another sex-positive female lead of color! Also, she’s the most competent fighter on the ship, and still engages in traditionally feminine activites because she likes them. Also, her and Wash are possibly my favorite TV couple in history, and if not, they’re definitely up there with Leslie Knope and Ben Wyatt.
- Simon Tam: He’s a rich doctor with a cushy job who gave up everything to protect his sister. Also, he’s this incredibly handsome dude who is not at all suave, and I love watching him awkwardly stumble over attempts at courting, especially since he’s so repressed and aylee is so forward and they really like each other but neither of them knows how to respond to the other.
I think I got all of them!

Ended up telling my babysitting charge:
- A simplified version of “The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon”
- Firefly episodes “Jaynestown” and “Trash.” She is absolutely tickled pink at Simon’s complete inability to talk to a woman romantically.
- An extensive character profile of River Song, who’s one of her favorite characters.
We also watched some Legend of Korra, drew a little bit, and ate pizza. Incidentally, I looked like some kind of wizard when I caught her flipping the same page back and forth rather than actually reading.

Had a lot of fun with the Panem ones, so I decided to do a Firefly poster.

Cap'n Mal vs. Dr. Who (any incarnation, I suppose)

I imagine with most Doctors, ESPECIALLY 10 and 11, they would make some clever comment that implied Mal wasn’t the highest authority on Serenity, then Mal would do a series of faces:
- One, straight-faced, looking off into space slightly to the left of the Doctor.
- Two, he sharply angles his head down, still straight-faced, eyes straight forward in his head.
- Three, his head still down, he gives a small chuckle while cocking his head a little to the right.
Then he punches the Doctor directly in the face, helps him up, and they decide to work together to solve the problem.
However, with Nine, there would be no fight. They’d just lean up on a wall and make snarky comments to each other for hours, and then Wash would make a joke implying them to be boyfriends, and Mal would reply with a joke confirming it. Jayne makes a puzzled remark because the joke went over his head. Simon does a wide-eyed, cheek inflating looks, and Shepherd Book walks past them, pats the Doctor on the shoulder, and says “As they say, judge not lest ye be judged.”

So I was trying to think of an alternate cast for Firefly for if it were a classic film. Nia, with her extensive knowledge of both subjects, has been helpful, but I don’t have it down just yet. Here’s what we have so far:
- Gregory Peck as Capt. Mal Reynolds
- Audrey Hepburn as Inara Serra (or possibly Elizabeth Taylor?)
- Marlon Brando as Jayne Cobb
Ones that are a bigger mystery include:
- Shepherd Book: There isn’t a large pool of well-known actors of color, at least not actors old enough to play the Shepherd. The best we could come up with was Sidney Poitier, although he may be a bit young.
- Zoe Washburne: Same issue as Shepherd Book, although Nia’s suggestion was Dorothy Dandridge, which I could possibly get behind.
- Hoban Washburne: No clue, but I’d assume he should be a comic actor.
- Simon and River Tam: Also no clue.
Thoughts? Suggestions?
